November 27, 2012Butler women's basketball player Jamillah Bonner came into the 2012-13 season being looked at as one of the top players in the Jayhawk conference and the NJCAA. Last week she was rewarded by signing a national letter of intent to play at Wichita State University for the 2013-14 season.
Bonner said the reason she chose Wichita State is "their style of play suits me perfectly" and "I wanted to stay close to home."
Before she chose to play for Butler coach Mike Helmer and the Grizzlies, Bonner played at Wichita Southeast High School where she was selected to the All-City League team three times.
Since joining Butler last season Bonner has made her presence known. Last season she finished second in the Region VI in scoring and finished in the top 10 in several other categories. She was also selected to the Jayhawk West All-Conference team and was named to the second team All-Region VI. This season she is currently second in the region in scoring with 20.6 points per game.
"I am proud of Jamillah and the opportunity she has," Helmer said. "She works hard and she deserves this chance."
On goshockers.com Wichita State head coach Jody Adams expressed her excitement by saying, "I believe she is a program-changer in how she plays and the tempo at which she plays. I've never, in the past few years, seen anyone play on both sides of the ball and leave it out there every possession like she does. In doing that in our system she could be the most decorated junior college player to leave Wichita State in two years. She has phenomenal speed and leaping ability. She is a fighter and has an edge."
Before Bonner can continue her playing career at the NCAA Division I, level she will try to continue to make her mark on the Butler program.
