TOUGH ROAD CHALLENGE AWAITS LADY DRAGONS AS HCC TRAVELS TO SURGING BUTLER


Perfect through 16 games, the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team faces its toughest road challenge of the season on Wednesday as the Lady Dragons head to El Dorado to take on the surging Butler Grizzlies.

Tipoff for Wednesday's Jayhawk West contest is at 5:30 p.m. at Butler's Power Plant. The game will be broadcast on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister station KWBW-AM (1450) beginning at 5:20 p.m. Live video and an audio-only streams will be available on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 5:20 p.m.

The Lady Dragons (16-0, 2-0 Jayhawk West) return to the court where they lost their last regular-season game ... the Power Plant. HCC dropped a 55-51 decision to Butler on Jan. 15, 2011.

Since that game, Hutchinson has reeled off 57 consecutive regular-season victories and 30-straight wins in the Jayhawk West.

This will be the third game in five days for Hutchinson. The Lady Dragons defeated No. 11 Garden City 61-46 on Monday night at the Sports Arena.

The Grizzlies (12-3, 0-1) got a chance to rest after an epic three-overtime battle on Saturday at Garden City. Jayhawk West Player of the Year candidate Jamillah Bonner had 31 points and 12 rebounds in an 86-84 loss. Butler had its first conference bye on Monday.

Against Garden City, the Lady Dragons saw the Jayhawk West's No. 1 and 3 scorers. They will see No. 2 on Wednesday in Butler's Bonner, who is averaging 19.7 points per game. Bonner also leads the league in offensive rebounding.

Wednesday's game features the top two defensive teams in the KJCCC. HCC allows opponents 46.3 points per game. Butler allows 51.5 points per game.



HCC's Sports Arena winning streak up to 72 games

A 61-46 victory over Garden City on Monday extended the Lady Dragons' team-record home-court winning streak to 72 games.

The current streak started with an 80-26 victory over Pratt on Jan. 28, 2009. The last team to defeat the Lady Dragons at the Sports Arena was Barton.

HCC has won 86 of its last 88 games at home and are 99-3 at the Sports Arena under head coach John Ontjes.

HCC has had 11 streaks of at least 10 or more consecutive home victories.



Current winning streak now program's 3rd longest

Hutchinson's current 16-game winning streak is now tied for the third-longest winning streak in team history.

The 2012-13 Lady Dragons were are tied with the 1977-78, 1989-90 and 2004-05 teams for the third-longest start in team history.

The longest winning streak in team history is 36, set by last season's NJCAA national runner-up team who started the season 36-0 before losing in the national championship game.

The second-longest streak in team history was also snapped in the NJCAA Tournament. The 1976-77 Lady Dragons reeled off 26-consecutive wins before falling in the national semifinals.



2012-13 Lady Dragons off to 3rd best start ever

Now 16-0 to start the season, the 2012-13 Lady Dragons have tied the third-best start in program history.

Last year's NJCAA national runner-up team holds the record by winning its first 36 games before dropping the national championship game.

The 1976-77 Lady Dragons, which finished fourth in the NJCAA Tournament, started that season with 24-straight wins before losing the final two games of the national tournament.

The current team is tied with the 1989-90 and 2004-05 Lady Dragons at 16-0.

HCC's women have had 10 starts to seasons of at least 10-0.



HCC working on other impressive streaks

+ Regular-season streak - The Lady Dragons won 57 consecutive regular-season games entering play vs. Butler.

The last regular-season loss came on Jan. 15, 2011 at El Dorado, a 55-51 loss at Butler.

The current regular-season winning streak is the longest since HCC reeled off 25 straight regular-season wins from 1977-79.

+ Jayhawk West regular-season streak - Hutchinson has won 30-consecutive games in the Jayhawk West regular season. That streak dates back to Jan. 15, 2011 when Butler defeated HCC 55-51.

+ Non-Conference regular-season streak - With its 81-52 victory over Neosho County on Jan. 2, the Lady Dragons have reeled off 35-straight non-conference victories dating back to a 69-63 loss to South Plains on Nov. 20, 2010.

+ Opponents shooting less than 50 percent - Opponents have not shot 50 percent or more from the field in 80 consecutive games.

The last time an opponent shot 50 percent or better came in the sixth game of the 2010-11 season when South Plains shot right at 50 percent (23 of 46) from the field. That's the only time in the John Ontjes era that an opponent has shot 50 percent.

Before that, the Lady Dragons went 117 straight games without allowing a team to shoot 50 percent or better.



Lady Dragons in the NJCAA National Poll

The HCC Lady Dragons ran their streak of being ranked in the Top 10 of the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Poll to 23 weeks with a No. 2 ranking on Dec. 12.

The Lady Dragons maintained their No. 2 ranking after victories over No. 25 NEO, the Bethany College JV and No. 4 Iowa Western.

The No. 2 ranking ties the highest mark ever achieved by the Lady Dragons, matching an eight-week run at No. 2 during last seasons' 36-1 national runner-up season.

Hutchinson started the season ranked No. 6 after last season's national runner-up finish. The Lady Dragons were No. 5 in the first regular-season poll.

This is the fourth-straight season that the HCC women have appeared in the NJCAA preseason poll. The No. 6 preseason pick is the highest in team history, topping last season's starting point of No. 7. Two years ago, the Lady Dragons started the season ranked 17th in the preseason poll. Three years ago, Hutchinson opened the season at No. 10.

HCC's current run in the Top 10 is the longest since a 16-week run during the 1977 and 1978 seasons.

HCC has been a part of the NJCAA poll for 40-straight and 50 of the last 52 polls.



About the 2012-13 Lady Dragons

+ The Lady Dragons rank No. 1 currently in the Jayhawk West in scoring offense, field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage. HCC is currently averages 79.2 points per game, while shooting 46.7 percent overall and 40.4 percent from 3-point range.

+ Hutchinson leads the Jayhawk West and is fifth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 46.3 points per game. The Lady Dragons are tied for first with Butler in field-goal defense at 30.1 percent. Opponents are shooting 22.2 from 3-point range, which ranks second in the league.

+ Sophomore Chrisstasia Walter is HCC's leading scorer and is leading the league in steals and assists. Walter is averaging 13.9 points per game, which ranks fifth in the Jayhawk West. She is shooting 44.7 percent and she has scored in double figures in 14 of 16 games. Walter averages 5.7 rebounds and league highs of 6.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game.

+ Coming off a career-high 21 points on 8 of 8 shooting against Garden City, freshman Jamie Patrick is sixth in the KJCCC West in scoring averaging 13.2 points per game. She leads the West in field-goal percentage at 60.6 percent and 3-point field-goal percentage at 53.4 percent. She has a team-high 31 3-point goals. Patrick is averaging 5.4 rebounds per game. Over her last nine games, Patrick is averaging 14.2 points per game, shooting 61.6 percent from the field.

+ Sophomore Jasmine Patterson averages 11.6 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds. She also has a team-high 18 blocks, which is fourth in the Jayhawk West. Patterson is ninth in the Jayhawk West in scoring and 10th in rebounding.

+ Sophomore Aja Sorrells is fourth on the team at 9.4 points per game, shooting 48.7 percent. She is averaging 5.5 rebounds. Sorrells leads the KJCCC West in free-throw percentage at 80.9 percent. She is sixth in steals at 2.6 per game.

+ The Lady Dragons average a league-best 21.9 assists per game. Walter has a team-high 96 and freshman Jen'Von'Ta Hill has 65. Hill is fourth in the league with 4.1 assists per game. Both Walter and Hill have 10-assist games this season.

+ The Lady Dragons are out-rebounding opponents with a plus-12.2 rebounding margin. HCC is pulling down 44.6 rebounds, while giving up 32.4 boards. HCC is averaging 15.8 offensive rebounds per game. The Lady Dragons have broken the 60-rebound mark twice this season. Four different Lady Dragons - Patterson, Sorrells, Walter and Patrick - all average more than five rebounds per game.

+ HCC turns the ball over 16.1 times per game, while forcing 24.8 turnovers. Fourteen of 16 opponents have had 20 or more turnovers this season.

+ The Lady Dragons are scoring 25.4 points per game off the bench. Freshman Bri Starks is averaging 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. Freshman Tahniya Sweatt is averaging 8.3 points, but has missed the last 12 games because of injury.

+ Starks ranks sixth in the Jayhawk West in field-goal percentage at 53.5 percent.

+ Hutchinson is 3-0 vs. nationally ranked opponents, defeating No. 25 NEO, No. 4 Iowa Western and No. 11 Garden City.

+ The Lady Dragons have had 20 or more assists in 11 of 16 games this season. HCC has seven players with 20 or more assists so far this season and four with more than 30 assists.



Scouting Butler

+ Butler comes off a three-overtime heart-breaking loss on Saturday at Garden City. Jamillah Bonner had 31 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and five assists in that game. Ashlee Ivy had 16 points, while Katie Anderson and Samantha Satterlee had 10 points each.

+ This is the best offensive team that Butler has had in head coach Mike Helmer's five seasons. The Grizzlies average 78.4 points per game, which is now second in the Jayhawk West. The Grizzlies are tied for third in field-goal percentage at 42.7 percent and rank eighth in 3-point shooting at 30.1 percent.

+ The Grizzlies have one of the best defensive teams in the league and NJCAA. Butler allows 51.5 points per game, which ranks No. 2 in the Jayhawk West and No. 11 nationally. Butler leads the league in 3-point defense at 20.1 percent and is tied for first in defensive field-goal percentage at 30.1 percent.

+ Bonner is a Jayhawk West Player of the Year candidate who is the second-leading scorer currently at 19.7 points per game. She has seven games of 24 or more points with a high of 30 points. Bonner is shooting 38.0 percent, 25.7 percent from 3-point range and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line. Bonner is second in the West in rebounding (9.7 rpg) and leads the league in offensive rebounding (4.07 rpg). Bonner ranks second in the Jayhawk West with 3.80 steals per game.

+ Ivy averages 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Her 55.1 percent shooting percentage ranks second in the Jayhawk West.

+ Tysia Manuel averages 8.7 points per game, while Samantha Satterlee averages 8.0 points per game.

+ Shayla Williams has a team-high 14 3-pointers and Katie Anderson has 11 treys.

+ The Grizzlies average 49.2 rebounds per game, which leads the Jayhawk West. Butler allows 36.9 boards. The Grizzlies are second in rebounding margin in the league.

+ The Busters turn the ball over 17.5 times per game and force 21.7 turnovers.

+ Butler averages 16.2 steals per game, which is No. 1 in the Jayhawk West.

+ Butler is second in assists as a team at 15.1 per game. Carly Bettencort is ninth in the league at 3.2 assists per game. Five players have at least 28 assists.



Series History vs. Butler

This will be the 75th meeting between Hutchinson and Butler in a continuous series that began in 1976.

The Lady Dragons own a 47-27 overall record vs. the Grizzlies. HCC is 25-11 against Butler at the Sports Arena and 21-16 in El Dorado. HCC won the only Region VI meeting, which happened last season.
