January 17, 2013NO. 1 LADY DRAGONS SURVIVE SLOW START TO DEFEAT BARTON
Surviving scoring only two field goals in the first 7 1/2 minutes of play, the NJCAA No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team overcame that slow start to win its 73rd-consecutive game at the Sports Arena on Wednesday.
Sophomore Aja Sorrells scored a career-high 20 points and sophomore Jasmine Patterson had her second-straight double-double to lead the Lady Dragons to a 65-56 victory over the Barton Cougars.
Hutchinson (18-0, 4-0 Jayhawk West) led by as many as 14 points (52-38) in the second half, but the Cougars (11-7, 1-3) made enough shots to make for some anxious moments for the Lady Dragons. Erin Copeland's 3-pointer with 3:29 to play pulled Barton within 55-53.
The Lady Dragons answered with two Sorrells 3-pointers and a momentum-changing 3-pointer from freshman Jamie Patrick to push the lead to 60-53 with 1:25 to play.
After Barton pulled within two points, Hutchinson used an 11-1 run to put the game away.
Hutchinson won its 59th-straight regular-season game and 32nd-consecutive Jayhawk West game. The Lady Dragons also defeated Barton for the seventh-straight game, the longest by HCC in series history.
Sorrells hit 9 of 16 field goals and the two clutch free throws down the stretch to lead the Lady Dragons. She is the fourth Lady Dragon player to post a 20-point game. She added five rebounds and two steals.
Patterson had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Patterson was 7 of 11 shooting. She tied a career high with four assists.
Patrick hit three 3-point goals and finished with nine points and five rebounds. Freshman Bri Starks had six points and four rebounds. Sophomores Jade Herl and Chrisstasia Walter had five points each.
The Lady Dragons shot 42.6 percent from the field (26 of 61), including 4 of 16 from 3-point range and 9 of 18 from the free-throw line. The Lady Dragons out-rebounded Barton 44-41 and had 21 assists with 17 turnovers.
Taschell Phillips scored 16 points with five rebounds to lead Barton. Erin Copeland had 13 points and Kailai Bratner and Blair Bloomfield added 11 points each.
The Cougars shot 35.1 percent overall (20 of 57), going 5 of 17 from long range and 11 of 18 from the free-throw line. The Cougars turned the ball over 19 points, but had an HCC opponent-high 15 steals.
Hutchinson shot just 37.5 percent in the opening half (13 of 32). The Lady Dragons scored just two field goals over the first 7 1/2 minutes in falling behind 12-5 after a Phillips field goal with 14:00 to play in the opening half.
The Lady Dragons finally started finding a little offensive flow and went on a 10-3 run over the next 6:16 to tie the game at 15-all on a Walter steal and layup with 8:44 remaining in the half.
The Cougars then built two three-point leads, the second at 20-17 with 6:58 to play after a Brantner field goal. HCC then went on an 11-0 run over the next 3:33. A Patrick 3-pointer gave Hutchinson the lead at 22-20 and Herl followed that with a 3-pointer to lead 25-20. At the completion of the run, HCC led 28-20 with 3:49 to play.
The Lady Dragons led by four points late when Sorrells grabbed a loose ball and drove the length of the floor for a layup as the buzzer sounded to give the Lady Dragons a 21-25 halftime lead.
Hutchinson used an early second-half 8-0 run to build a double-figure lead for the first time. Walter's steal and layoff gave HCC a 21-29 lead with 15:43 to play.
The Cougars finally trimmed the lead to single digits at 53-44 after a Phillips bucket with 7:11 to play. Phillips scored six-straight points for Barton which was part of a 15-3 run. Copeland's 3-pointer pulled the Cougars within 55-53 with 3:29 to play.
The Lady Dragons answered the challenge, going on that 11-1 run. A Sorrells layup took the HCC lead back to double figures at 64-54 with 43 seconds to play.
The Lady Dragons travel to Colby for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday at the Colby Community Building.
GAME NOTES - HCC's 18-game winning streak is the third longest in team history. The 18-0 start to the season is also the third longest in team history. Barton is the 82nd-straight Blue Dragon opponent to shoot less than 50 percent in a game. HCC head coach John Ontjes recorded his 100th victory in the Sports Arena. HCC is now 25-52 all-time vs. Barton. The HCC sophomores won their 54 game in an HCC uniform. This was all-time win No. 797. HCC is 13-0 at the Sports Arena this season. HCC had led at halftime in all 18 games this season. This was the 12th time HCC has had 20 or more assists. .. Jasmine Patterson has three double-doubles this season and four in her career. Bri Starks had a season-high three assists while Herl and Patterson tied career highs in assists with four.
