January 19, 2013We spent Friday at the El Dorado tournament, especially wanting to get a look at Gardner Edgerton's Traveohn Wrench and Kyle Huppe.
Around 200 photos from the four games can be viewed at Hovpen Photo Shop
Huppe hit well from the outside, finishing with 19 points while Wrench picked up 10 as they defeated the host El Dorado 62-46 to advance to Saturday's finals against Kapaun Mt. Carmel which defeated Wichita Collegiate 60-50 in spite of Riley Kemmer's 18 points. Kemmer's 18 was offset by the play of Braden Hullings who nailed 21 and made all the difference in the world.
There were a lot of football players in the games at El Dorado in addition to Wrench as all-State linebacker Matt Plank also played for Gardner Edgerton and in the same game, El Dorado quarterback Travis House scored 10 for the hosts. His main receiver this past season, Trevor Crain finished with 12.
Trinity quarterback Matt Jones was also in on his teams 62-55 win over Campus with 15 points although Ryan Miller led all scorers in that game with 23. Tyler Burns, one of the top sophomore prospects in Kansas also played for Trinity.
Out west, in the Dodge City tournament, Wichita North proved it could win without Conner Frankamp in the lineup and did so, playing over 18 minutes without their star in regulation and another four in OT and defeating Scott City which had come into the game fresh off a knockout punch against Derby. Derby, Newton, and Shawnee Mission South also won Friday night and North will meet South in the finals.
The day after suffering a 108-40 defeat, KC Harmon comes back to win their first game of the season defeating the host Valley Center team in the January Jam. Also, Blue Valley Northwest makes the finals with a 30 point win over Wichita Northwest where Clayton Custer added another 20 points for the season to an impressive total already.
Wichita East scored 100 against Topeka West while Southeast beat Topeka High 61-38 and over in Kansas City, Eisenhower defeated KC Piper by three.
