January 29, 2013SPENCER IS NAMED THE JAYHAWK CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Posting back-to-back 20-point games and this third double-double of the season, Hutchinson Community College sophomore guard A.J. Spencer was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season on Monday.
Spencer helped the No. 1 Blue Dragons answer a huge challenge on Saturday as he led a late HCC surge in a victory over Cloud County. With HCC leading by only seven points with 7:36 to play, Spencer scored 14 points in a 22-6 run. Spencer posted his third double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead Hutchinson vs. the Thunderbirds.
For the week, Spencer averaged 22.5 points per game, shooting 71.4 percent from the field and 88.2 percent from the free-throw line. Spencer also averaged 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocked shots in two games last week.
He had 22 points on 7 of 9 shooting in a victory over Pratt last Wednesday.
Spencer is the third Blue Dragon and sixth overall time this season an HCC player has won weekly conference honors.
Spencer is now eligible for NJCAA National Player of the Week honors. That award will be announced on Wednesday.
