RECAP: 2013 KCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

Wichita, Kan. - At the end of the second and final day of the KCAC Inaugural Indoor Track and Field Championships, Southwestern College claimed the Men's and Women's titles with 138 and 161 points. Jim Helmer and Mike Kirkland of Southwestern College earned Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Coaches of the Year. Athlete of the Meet awards went to Frank Adelman and Christine Sheppard of Southwestern College.





Day One

Day one consisted three field events (Weight Throw, Long Jump, Pole Vault) and four track events (4x800m Relay, 5000m, 60m prelims, 60m hurdle prelims).

Michael Klaassen (Tabor) repeats as weight throw champion. His throw of 16.10m (52'10") falls short of his 2012 KCAC record 16.37m. Southwestern's Allyssa Zentner wins women's weight throw with a toss of 13.56m (44'6").

Ryin Brandt (Ottawa) and Tina Clausen (Friends) broke the KCAC pole vault records on Friday. Brandt's vault of 4.4m (14'5.23") betters the record by nearly six inches. Clausen's vault of 3.28m (10'9.14") ups the record just over nine inches.

Tabor's Emily Post just missed the KCAC record with a first place Long Jump of 5.21m (17'1.125") (Rhea Rollins, Southwestern, 5.22). Derrick Toney (McPherson) takes the men's gold with a mark of 6.7m (21'11.8").

In the 4 x 800m Relay the men's and women's teams of Southwestern finished first in KCAC record-breaking times. Moundbuilder women ran 10:01.08, besting Friends' 2012 time by 0.06 seconds. Moundbuilder men posted a time of 7:58.58 hitting the NAIA "B" Standard qualifying mark and overcoming Tabor's 2012 time by 0.64 seconds.

KCAC Cross Country champion Frank Adelman (Southwestern) took the crown as the KCAC 5000m Indoor Champion with a time of 15:24.18, teammate Colton McNinch came in second and is still the meet record holder with is his 2012 time of 15:02.17. Aspen Frey (McPherson) the ninth place finisher in the KCAC Cross Country Championship, wins the women's indoor 5000m with a time of 19:14.83.



Day Two

Day Two consisted three field events (Shot Put, High Jump, Triple Jump) and twelve track events (Distance Medley, 60m finals, 60mH finals, 200m, 400m, 600m, 800m, 1000m, Mile, 2000m, 4x400m).

Ashley Lyons (Friends) defended her KCAC title with a throw of 12.4m (40'8.19"). She did not better her KCAC Indoor record of 12.56m. Sam Blecha (Ottawa) improves from third in 2012 to first in 2013 with a mark of 13.99m (41'8.5").

Emily Post (Long Jump Champion) medaled in the women's triple jump (Silver, 10.94m / 35'10.75") and high jump (Gold, 1.62m / 5'3.75"). Post's mark in the high jump equals the NAIA "B" qualifying standard and misses her own record by 0.78 inches. Arryana Barton (McPherson) took first in women's triple jump with a 11.55m (37'10.75") mark. The jump qualifies her under the NAIA "A" Standard and sets a new meet record. Barton also medaled (Silver) in the women's shot put.

Aziz Spellman-Smith (Tabor) won the men's triple jump with a mark of 13.7m (44'11.5"). McPherson's Derrick Toney cleared 6'11", for the second year in a row, on his way to winning the High Jump. Toney's jump of 2.11m qualifies him for Nationals under the "A" Standard.

Christine Sheppard (Women's Athlete of the Meet) takes both the Women's 60m (7.99), 200m (26.51), and 400m (1:01.02). Sheppard set new KCAC Championship Meet records in the 200 and 400 while just missing her 2012 time in the 60m by 0.05 seconds. Rhea Rollins (Southwestern) defended as women's 60m hurdles champion. Rollin surpassed the NAIA "B" qualifying mark with her time of 9.15, 0.01 seconds off her 2012 time.

Cedrique Smith (Sterling) earned his second top finish of the meet in the 60m hurdles with new meet record, NAIA 4th best, and "A" qualifying time of 8.09s. Carlos Cox (Friends) won the 60m at a NAIA "A" qualifying time of 6.92. Alex Grier (Tabor) finished first in the 200m at 22.60, Carlos Cox finished second. Hunter Cline (Southwestern) takes home the 400m crown with a time of 51.29.

Ottawa's Sara Dains ran a 1.43.10 in the 600m, besting the record by nearly four seconds. Nathan Vogel (Tabor) took first place in the 600m (1.23.90), but is unable to better his 2012 championship time of 1.23.59.

Cassie Hollenback (Southwestern) and James Farris (Bethany) set new records in the 800m. Farris' run of 1:57.30 barley misses on a NAIA "B" qualifying mark. Hollenback finished in 2:21.71, besting the record by nearly a second.

Kristie Adams keeps the 1000m title at Friends, finishing in 3:14.94. Garrett Daugherty (Tabor) sets a new Men's 1000m meet record with a NAIA "B" qualifying time of 2:32.98.

In the Mile Run, Adelman takes first setting a new meet record (4:32.48). Hollenback finishes at 5:17.70. Caeser Castillo (Saint Mary) edges out Adelman in the 3000m with a time of 8:55.87. Rachel Renken (Friends) takes the women's 3000m (10:58.93).

Southwestern finished on top in both the men's 4 x 800m Relay (7:58.58, Meet Record, NAIA "B") and the men's 4000m Distance Medley Relay (10:51.59). Tabor's men's team beat out Bethany to capture the Men's 4x400m Relay (3:26.88) and best their 2012 meet record.

Southwestern repeated as women's 4 x 400m champs, setting a new record (4:09.10). Friends women's repeated as 4x800m champs, setting a new record (10:01.08). Tabor women took home the 4000m Distance Medley Relay (13:21.39).
