BLUE DRAGONS RALLY TO SPLIT WITH ROSE STATE ON OPENING DAY

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - A freakish-type play may have cost the Hutchinson Community College baseball team a shot at winning the first game of the 2013 season in Saturday against Rose State College.

Another strange play directly led to the Blue Dragons rallying in the sixth inning of Game 2 to get new head coach Ryan Schmidt his first victory in the HCC dugout.

Rose State won the opener with Hutchinson 7-4, coming back from three runs down after two innings to do so. The big play came in the fourth inning when with two on and two out, Tanner Hessman hit a fly ball deep to right field that HCC's Christian Cox thought he had a play on. Cox hit the wall hard and the ball bounded away turning the play into a three-run inside-the-park home run and a 5-3 Raider lead.

Rose State, which had eight games under its belt before Saturday, led 3-1 entering the sixth inning. The Blue Dragons took advantage of a Rose State error a couple of walks and a single from Jacob Ek to tie the game at 3-all. Then, with Quintin Crandal at bat, Rose State catcher Jake Bledsoe allowed a passed ball to plate the go-ahead run and made matters worse by overthrowing RSC pitcher Dylon Sturges to allow another run to score.

The bullpen came up big for the Blue Dragons in the second came. After starter Logan Landon allowed three runs in three innings, freshman left-hander Austin Harms threw three-plus innings of dazzling relief. Harms allowed just two hits and struck out three in earning the victory.

After allowing a leadoff double to start the seventh, freshman right-hander Zach Eden came in to slam the door on the Raiders. He faced three Rose State batters and struck out two to earn his first save.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Rose State 9-6 in game two. Both Ek and Chris Pinne went 3 for 4 to lead HCC. Dakota Shadoan and Pinne had the only extra-base hits in Game 2, both were doubles. Brooks DeBord reached base in all four plate appearances for HCC in the nightcap, scoring one run.
