Tiger baseball team goes 3-0 against Texas schools

Taking part in games in Paris, Texas over the weekend, the No. 15-ranked Cowley College baseball team went 3-0 to improve its record to 4-1 on the early season.

On Saturday, the Tigers opened with an 8-5 win over North Central Texas. Trailing 3-1 after four innings of play, Cowley scored six runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. The Tigers took advantage of three walks and a hit batter, while getting a two-run double by freshman designated hitter Dylan Delso.

Delso would add an RBI single in the top of the seventh and finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's in the win. Freshman Zach Cantwell started on the mound for the Tigers and allowed one earned run in three innings pitched. Sophomore Bryan McClellan (1-0) followed and allowed one run in three innings as he earned his first win of the season. Ty Rowe allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before closing out the win.

Naveed Asif took the loss for North Central Texas as he allowed three runs without recording an out in the top of the fifth inning.

On Sunday vs. Paris, Cowley scored six runs in the top of the second inning of game one en route to a 6-2 win.

Freshman Levi Skinner (2-0) was the beneficiary of the six-run outburst as he allowed only one hit and no runs in three innings pitched. Skinner struck out four and walked one, while improving to 2-0 on the season.

"It was good to throw a six spot on the board and allow him to relax a bit," Cowley assistant coach Darren Burroughs said.

Freshmen Garrett Hoover and Tyler Day followed with an inning of relief apiece, while freshman Seth Holman closed out the win by allowing one run on two hits in two innings pitched.

Six of Cowley's seven hits in the game came during the six-run second. Mike Parker, who drove in two runs in the win over North Central Texas, had a two-run double, while Zack Mills came through with a two-run single.

Harrison Spruiell took the loss for Paris as he was tagged for six runs in five innings pitched.

In the final game of the weekend, Cowley built leads of 2-0 and 5-3 before watching Paris come back to send the game to extra innings tied at 5-5. The game would remain tied at 5-5 until the Tigers struck for four runs in the top of the 11th inning. Tyler Rolland singled leading off the 11th and came around to score what turned out to be the game-winning run on a bases loaded walk by Tiger second baseman Matt Anderson.

Anderson finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Delso had another big game as he had four of Cowley's 18 hits. Seven Tigers had at least two hits in the win.

Freshman Mark Meadors started on the mound for Cowley and allowed six hits and two earned runs in four innings. Brent Burroughs and Lane Trudo followed with two solid innings of relief apiece.

Freshman Ryan Jenkins (1-0) pitched the ninth and 10th innings for the Tigers and allowed only one base runner in picking up his first win of the season.

Fellow freshman Alex Graham finished off the win by pitching a scoreless 11th inning.

In the three games, Cowley out-scored its opponents by a score of 23-12.

"It was a good weekend for us," Darren Burroughs said. "We saw a lot of progress but still have some work to do defensively."

Matthew Lusk did not retire any of the five batters he faced in the top of the 11th innings and took the loss for Paris.
