March 1, 2013No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers use team effort in sweep of Maple Woods
Getting a pair of dominating pitching performances on the mound and scoring a season-high 19 runs in the second game of its doubleheader vs. Maple Woods Community College Tuesday in Arkansas City, the No. 3-ranked Cowley College softball team swept both games vs. the Lady Monarchs.
Keelyn Bonar allowed only four hits and no earned runs in Cowley's 3-1 win of the opener. Bonar struck out five and walked none, while improving to 4-1 on the season.
Laura Seemann's RBI double scored Jordan Haya with the go-ahead run in a two-run sixth inning for the Lady Tigers. Haya finished with two of Cowley's four hits in the win.
In game two, Cowley had 13 players record at least one hit in the 19-4 win. Four players who did not start in the opener had multiple hits in the nightcap as the Lady Tigers finished with 18 hits.
Freshman Emily Davis led the way with three hits, while Caitlyn Cosme, Melaney Anderson and Sierra Schumacher added two hits apiece.
Seemann belted her second home run of the season and now leads the team with 15 RBI's.
Freshman pitcher Jessica Seay retired all 12 batters she faced in improving her record to 5-0 on the season.
Cowley head coach Ed Hargrove was happy to see his starting pitchers bounce back after a tough weekend.
"With Keelyn and Jessica pitching the way they did, I feel much better about our chances," Hargrove said.
Freshman Brooke Benge relieved Seay in the fifth inning and allowed four hits and four runs before closing out the victory.
The Lady Tigers will have a week off before traveling to Concordia to face Cloud County at 2 p.m.
