LADY DRAGONS REACH 30-WIN PLATEAU IN REGION VI OPENER


For the third time this season, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team dominated the Colby Trojans, this time the No. 3 nationally ranked Lady Dragons rolled to a 90-31 victory in the opening round of the 2013 Region VI Tournament on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson (30-1) advances to the Region VI quarterfinals where it will meet Seward County (20-10) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

The Lady Dragons reached the 30-win plateau for the fourth time - all coming in the John Ontjes era - tying the 2010-11 HCC team for the third-most victories in program history. The Lady Dragons also extended their program record home-court winning streak to 80 games. With 19 steals against Colby on Saturday, the 2013 Lady Dragons broke the program record for steals with 467.

The 2013 Hutchinson sophomores also tied a team record with their 66th victory, matching the 2012 sophomores for most wins by a Lady Dragon sophomore class.

For the third time this season - Hutchinson defeated Colby for the 15th consecutive time - the Lady Dragons devoured Colby defensively, limiting the Trojans (7-24) to 27.1 percent shooting (13 of 48). Colby was just 2 of 19 from 3-point range and the Trojans turned the ball over 29 times. In three games this season, Hutchinson has outscored Colby 257-91 and has forced 82 turnovers.

Leading 17-8 with 11:56 to play, the Lady Dragons outscored Colby 33-2 over the next 13 minutes, 29 seconds of game time to lead 51-10 with 18:29 to play in the second half.

Hutchinson shot better than 50 percent for the second-straight game and for the 12th time this season shooting 52.2 percent (36 of 69). The Lady Dragons were 6 of 16 from 3-point range and 12 of 20 from the free-throw line. HCC out-rebounded Colby 48-26 with 19 offensive rebounds. HCC had season highs of 29 assists and 19 steals while committing only 13 turnovers.

Making her first career start, freshman Jen'Von'Ta Hill was 8 of 12 shooting for a game-high 18 points with six assists, five rebounds and four steals to lead the Lady Dragons.

Sophomore Jasmine Patterson came off the bench for the first time this season and had 15 points on 5 of 7 shooting with six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Chrisstasia Walter had 11 points, six assists and three steals. Freshman Jamie Patrick had 10 points. Sophomore Jade Herl added nine points and sophomore Aja Sorrells had eight points.

HCC scored 34 points off Colby turnovers and had a 16-0 advantage in second-chance points.

Liene Liepina, Shantydra Arnold and Linda Pagrode had six points each to lead Colby. Haley Dinkel had five points.

Dinkel's basket with 15:07 to go pulled Colby within 9-6, but the offense dried up for the Trojans. HCC scored eight unanswered points before Liepina hit a layup with 11:56 to play to cut the Dragon lead to 17-8.

HCC then began to roll with a 16-0 run over the next 6:01. Herl's transition layup with 8:33 to play pushed the Dragon margin to 33-8 with 6:12 to play.

HCC then scored the final 13 points of the game as the Lady Dragons held Colby scoreless for the final 5:55 of the half to lead 46-10 at intermission. Hutch scored the first five points of the second half to complete a 33-2 run, leading 51-10 with 18:29 to play.

Leading by 38, HCC ran off a 12-0 run to lead 65-15 with 12:55 to play. Leading by 47, HCC reeled off another 12-0 run to lead 80-21 with 7:45 to play.

HCC's largest lead of the game was 60 points at 84-24 with 5:04 to play.

She moved into third place in single-season assists with 180. … Jen'Von'Ta Hill became the sixth Lady Dragon freshman to have at least 125 assists. … HCC set a team record for steals with 467 and moved up to fifth in total field goals (910), ninth in total 3-pointers (158), eighth in total rebounds (1,337) and third in total assists (679). … This was the seventh time this season to score 90 or more points and the 12th time to shoot 50 percent or better. … This was the seventh time to hold an opponent to less than 40 points and 15th time to hold an opponent to less than 30 percent shooting. … This was the 21st time this season to have at least 20 assists and 24th time to force 24 opponent turnovers. … Over her last six games, Hill has scored in double figures five times and is averaging 14.5 points per game. … Sophomore Kyrsten Crawford tied a career high with four assists.
