Butler opens conference play with road sweep at Seward
The Butler softball team opened conference play with a pair of road victories over Seward County on Wednesday.
The Grizzlies run-ruled the Saints 10-2 in five innings in the opener, then doubled up Seward 8-4 for the two-game sweep.
Butler moves to 19-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Grizzlies will host Colby Friday for two games, beginning at 3 p.m.
Butler scored all 10 runs in the final three innings to take the opening game. The Grizzlies were led offensively by Sydney Stuever, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Grizzlies opened up the scoring in the third inning when Alyssa Aguilar singled in a run. Stuever and Kaitlyn Wolken each added RBIs to give Butler a 4-0 lead.
Butler pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fourth when Stuever hit a two-run home run to left-center field.
In the fifth, Tyler Casada and Caitlin Coody had RBI doubles and Stuever drove home her fourth run of the game with a single.
With the win, Maggie Ham moved to 8-0 on the season, as she allowed just one hit and one run while striking out five in four innings.
In addition to Stuever's two runs, Kelsey Berlin and Tyler Casada scored two runs each.
Butler continued its offensive domination in the second game with 15 hits, with four players having a multiple-hit game. Kate James led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, with two RBI and two runs scored in the win.
The Grizzlies quickly got on the board with a five-run first inning on six hits. Kate James drove in two runs in the inning.
Butler scored a run in each of the final three innings. Ashley Malone had an RBI double in the fifth, Alyson Bressie added a pinch-hit RBI double in the sixth, and Caitlyn Coody capped the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Mac Millspaugh earned the win and moved to 7-0 on the season, going six innings and allowing five hits. Millspaugh held Seward scoreless for the first four innings and struck out four in the contest.
