March 9, 2013LADY DRAGONS HANG ON TO ADVANCE TO REGION VI FINALS
PARK CITY - Fortunately, style points don't count in postseason play and fortunate is what the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team was in Friday's third meeting of the season with the Butler Grizzlies in the Region VI Tournament semifinals at Hartman Arena.
The Lady Dragons led by eight points with 2:57 to play and needed sophomore Jade Herl to block a Butler attempt in the final second to win the game as Hutchinson defeated the Grizzlies 60-59.
Top-seeded Hutchinson (32-1) will now face second-seeded Cowley (29-4) in Saturday's 5 p.m. championship game at Hartman Arena. This is the third-straight time the Lady Dragons have appeared in the Region VI finals and it's the fourth time in the last five seasons as HCC will bid for its fourth Region VI crown, the third under head coach John Ontjes.
After trailing at halftime for only the second time this season, Hutchinson trailed for most of the second half, but never more than five points at any one time.
The Lady Dragons finally overtook Butler (26-7) when Chrisstasia Walter hit her third 3-pointer of the game to give Hutchinson a 50-49 lead with 4:49 to play. That started an 11-3 run that was capped by two Jasmine Patterson free throws with 2:57 to play and HCC leading 58-50.
Over the next 2 minutes, 17 seconds, Hutch's lead dipped to one with seven-straight Butler points. Shayla Williams' bucket with 40 seconds left cut the HCC advantage to 58-57.
Hutchinson sputtered down the stretch with two key turnovers and just 2 of 8 foul shooting in the final two minutes. Leading 60-59 with 7.5 seconds to play, Walter missed two free throws and Butler worked the ball down the floor with Williams taking a baseline jumper to win the game, but Herl's seventh career blocked shot ended the threat.
Walter had a huge game for Hutchinson with her fourth double-double of the season. She had 16 points, 12 rebounds, a career-high-tying seven steals and six assists. Walter made 3 of 5 from 3-point range.
Herl tied a career high with four 3-point goals and finished with 12 points. With HCC trailing 20-14 in the first half, Herl buried a huge 3-pointer to jump start the Lady Dragons offensively.
Jamie Patrick and Jasmine Patterson finished with nine points each and Jen'Von'Ta Hill added eight points for Hutchinson.
The Lady Dragons' 3-point shooting played a major role in the victory. HCC tied a season-high with 10 3-pointers on 29 attempts. Overall, Hutchinson shot 35.1 percent (20 of 57) and was a postseason-low 10 of 20 from the foul line. HCC had 19 turnovers and was out-rebounded by Butler 39-37.
Samantha Satterlee led the Grizzlies with 13 points, hitting three 3-point goals. Williams and Bettencort finished with 12 points each.
Butler shot an opponent-high 44.7 percent against HCC on Friday (21 of 47), going 5 of 11 from 3-point range and 12 of 22 from the foul line. The Grizzlies had 24 turnovers.
