Softball sweeps Coffeyville, sets up showdown with Labette

Allowing only one run in its doubleheader at Coffeyville on Thursday, the No. 3-ranked Cowley College softball team remained unbeaten in conference play heading into a crucial match up at Labette on Saturday.

The Lady Tigers defeated Coffeyville 6-1 and 4-0 to improve their record to 19-4 overall and 6-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The victories help Cowley keep pace with Labette, who are also undefeated in the conference.

On Thursday, Cowley's Keelyn Bonar (8-2) allowed only three hits and one run in a 6-1 win of the opener. While, freshman Jessica Seay ran her record to 10-0 by tossing a four-hit shutout in the nightcap. Seay struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

"Our pitching was the key for us," Cowley head coach Ed Hargrove said.

Leading 3-1 in the seventh inning of game one, freshman Jordan Haya helped put the game away by belting a two-run homer. The home run by Haya was her third of the season.

Freshman outfielder Shelby Smith went 3-for-3 in the victory.

In game two, sophomore first baseman Colby Dresher gave Seay all the offense she would need by blasting a two-run homer in the top of the second inning and going 3-for-3 in the win. The home run by Dresher was her fourth of the season and third in the past five games.

"We need that from her and continued production from the sophomores," Hargrove said.

Freshman Rondeci Oliver also played well by going 3-for-4 with a triple and a RBI.

Cowley will now focus on its doubleheader at Labette Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cardinals have swept the past two regular season doubleheaders against the Lady Tigers, so Hargrove expects it to be a battle.

"We know they will be one of the top teams in the conference, so winning there would be huge for us and give us an early advantage," Hargrove said.
