Burroughs picks up win No. 1,000 in illustrious career

With his team out-scoring Allen Community College 54-3 in a four-game sweep Friday and Saturday in Iola, Cowley College head baseball coach Dave Burroughs earned his 1,000th career win at the helm of the Tiger baseball program.

Burroughs has accomplished many great things during his 26 years at Cowley, including guiding the Tigers to back-to-back JUCO World Series title in 1997 and 1998. He has this year's team ranked No. 15 with a record of 18-4 overall and 12-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
On Friday, Cowley needed only five innings to win the opener 15-3 and the second game by a score of 24-0. The victories gave Burroughs 999 wins in his career.

The Tigers gave Burroughs his 1,000 career win by winning Saturday's opener by a score of 7-0. Burroughs didn't have to wait long to pick up win No. 1,001 as Cowley finished off the four-game sweep with an 8-0 win in the final game of the series.

"I have shared this uniform with a lot of good players and coaches that have made me better, and each deserve a part of this," Burroughs said. "I have been lucky to work in an organization where winning is important. It has been a special ride."
Cowley finished with 52 hits in the series, while Allen managed only 12 hits in the four games. The Tigers also drew 27 walks to the Red Devil's seven.

"I was impressed with our guys," Burroughs said. "Our guys had a great game plan at the plate and our pitching was phenomenal."
Leadoff batter A.J. Shaw went 7-for-16 with eight runs batted in and five runs scored. Sophomore first baseman Mike Parker added seven hits and eight runs batted in during the series, while JC Sturgeon went 7-for-12 with five RBIs and six runs scored.

Mark Meadors (3-1) earned the win in game one as he allowed five hits and three runs in five innings pitched. Freshman Levi Skinner allowed only one hit in five innings in the Tigers' 24-0 win of game two.
Sophomore Bryan McClellan (4-1) picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season by tossing a two-hit shutout in the 7-0 win. While, Zach Cantwell improved his record to 2-0 by allowing only two hits in four innings of Cowley's 8-0 win in the finale.

The Tigers will play a nine-inning game at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Tuesday at 2 p.m. before traveling to play a four-game conference series Friday and Saturday at Fort Scott.

"I hope we use this game against NOC to get ourselves ready for the weekend," Burroughs said.
