April 17, 2013Softball runs win streak to 15 with pair of shutout victories
As has been the case during its current winning streak, the No. 7-ranked Cowley College softball team got a pair of dominant outings on the mound and some impressive performances at the plate as they run-ruled Hesston College 11-0 in both games of Monday's doubleheader in Hesston.
During the Lady Tigers' current 15-game win streak the team has out-scored its opponents 134-12. Cowley is now 37-6 overall and 20-2 in the region. Hesston drops to 13-12 overall and 13-9 in the region.
On Monday, Cowley got a three-run homer by Jordan Haya in a seven-run second inning in the opener as they cruised to an 11-0 five-inning win. Thirteen different Lady Tigers had a hit in the win, while Keelyn Bonar (16-4) did not allow a run in four innings pitched. Brooke Benge pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning to close out the win.
Cowley jumped out to another early lead in game two by scoring five times in the first inning. Colby Dresher's three-run homer highlighted the big first inning for the Lady Tigers. The home run by Dresher was her fifth of the season.
"With the way our pitching has been I felt it was pretty well over at that point," Cowley head coach Ed Hargrove said.
Stephanie Couser hit a two-run homer and Haya blasted another three-run home run as Cowley put the game away with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Couser is now tied with Caitlyn Cosme for the team lead in home runs with eight, while Haya has six home runs on the season.
The Lady Tigers added 13 more hits in the second game and now have five everyday players batting .400 or better.
Freshman pitcher Jessica Seay ran her record to 20-0 as she pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning before having to leave the game after a ball hit by Hesston hit her in her pitching hand. Benge came on to record the final two outs of the game.
Cowley will play a doubleheader at Brown Mackie today at 2 p.m. Brown Mackie is 16-24 overall and 12-16 in the region.
With a one-game lead over Highland (21-3) in the region standings, Hargrove knows the importance of each remaining doubleheader.
"We cannot afford a split at this point," Hargrove said.
