September 3, 2013Volleyball beats Seminole State to improve to 6-0
One day after winning its 50th straight home match, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team took to the road for a match in Seminole, OK. The Lady Tigers were focused from the outset as they easily defeated Seminole State 25-8, 25-16, 25-19.
Cowley is now 6-0 on the season, while Seminole State falls to 3-3.
Lady Tiger head coach Jenifer Bahner liked the way her team opened Thursday's match.
"We were serving aggressively and attacking well that first match, which helped us take control of the game," Bahner said.
After winning game one by a score of 25-8, Bahner played several different players in games two and three.
"I wanted to give some kids a chance to see what they can do and to get them acclimated to how we do things," Bahner said.
Sophomore outside hitter B.J. Specht continued to be a dominant force and led all players with 16 kills.
"She is playing so well offensively and defensively," Bahner said. "She is not only attacking from the front row, but also when she is in the back row."
Sophomore transfer Tory Sharp added eight kills in the win.
"She has gotten off to a great start for us and does a great job of mixing up her attack," Bahner said.
Sophomore setter Katelynn Slade continues to do a good job of being a leader on the court and finished with 29 assists and five service-aces, while sophomore libero McKenzie Hartzog chipped in with a team-high 16 digs.
"McKenzie is doing a good job of being in charge of the defense," Bahner said.
Cowley will have some time off before hosting Coffeyville Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Red Ravens are currently 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
All high school volleyball athletes will be admitted free to Wednesday night's game.
