September 28, 2013KINSER POWERS LADY DRAGONS TO JAYHAWK WEST SWEEP OF SEWARD COUNTY
Freshman middle Nicole Kinser hit a Jayhawk Conference-high .533 attack percentage and had a couple of solo stuff blocks to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Seward County in a battle of teams tied for second place in the Jayhawk West on Friday at the Sports Arena.
Hutchinson kept pace with front-running Colby with a 25-19, 25-10, 25-21 victory over the Saints. This was Hutchinson's first sweep of Seward County since 2008. The Lady Dragons (12-6, 5-1 Jayhawk West) won their eighth match in a row.
Kinser finished with a team-high 10 kills on 15 attacks and two errors to lead the Lady Dragons, which out-hit Seward County 34-22 and out-blocked the Saints 6-5. Hutchinson had nine service aces to Seward County's four.
Sophomore Dragana Micic finished with seven kills, four aces and a solo block. Freshman Alex Keller had six kills, two aces and 10 set assists.
Sophomore Teresa Wade tallied five kills. With her second kill of the match, Wade became the 11th Lady Dragon in team history to reach 600 career kills. With her fourth kill, Wade took over 10th place on the Hutchinson career kills list with 603 kills. Wade added 11 kills for her fifth double-double of the season.
Sophomore libero Samantha Lackey finished with a team-high 15 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Minja Rankov added nine digs. Freshman Paige Weidner had 13 set assists.
Annalise Sanchez led Seward County (11-11, 4-2) with 11 kills, two aces and a block. Carolina Gasparini finished with five kills.
HCC roared out of the gate with four-straight points, two from Kinser on a kill and solo block. But the Saints rallied to take a 10-8 lead on back-to-back Sanchez aces. Down 12-11, Kinser got a key sideout with a kill and that started a run of eight-straight Hutchinson points to seize control of the set. A Kinser kill capped an 11-1 run to give HCC a 22-13 lead. Seward County scored 6 of the next 7 points, but back-to-back kills by Megan Heier and Wade closed out the set, 25-19.
Hutchinson dominated the second set, cashing in big on eight Seward County errors. Sanchez had four kills in the set, but the Lady Dragons limited the rest of the Seward County team to two kills in the second set. Leading 5-4, HCC went on a five-point run and a stretch of 9 of 11 points to lead 14-6 when Seward County was called for a net violation on an attack. Another 7-1 run upped the lead to 18-7. Another stretch of six in a row, capped by a Keller kill, had Hutch at set point with a 24-8 lead. The Saints scored two to get to 10, but were called for a double-contact violation to end the set.
Kinser and Micic had four kills each, while Micic and Weidner added two services aces each to lead the Lady Dragons, but HCC was far from clean in the third set, committing 10 errors in the set. Seward County took a 16-15 lead on a block by Morgan Riley, which prompted a Hutchinson timeout. A service ace upped the Saints lead to 17-15. But a Kawehi Granito-Wallace kill started a five-point Hutchinson run to build a 20-17 lead. Leading 22-20, a Micic kill and Weidner ace pushed HCC to match point. Two points later, Micic closed out the match with a kill.
The Lady Dragons will have a quick turnaround, taking on Cloud County at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.
