October 2, 2013Volleyball extends home winning streak to 54
Making it look easy! The No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team made it 54 wins in a row at home with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-10 win over Highland Community College Monday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The victory improves Cowley's record to 18-0 on the season and moves the Lady Tigers into a first place tie with Johnson County with a conference mark of 5-0.
"Our consistency of being able to keep runs going made a big difference," Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said.
On Monday, Cowley fell behind 2-0 in the first set before scoring 10 of the next 12 points to seize control. The Lady Tigers led by as many as 12 points (24-12) in the 25-14 win of the opening set.
Leading only 9-8 in the second set, Cowley began to pull away en route to the 25-16 win.
With sophomore outside hitter B.J. Specht contributing six of her team-high 11 kills in the third set, Cowley was never threatened in the 25-10 win.
Specht added 12 digs to go along with her 11 kills. Jessica McDougald chipped in with 10 kills, while Lana Da Silva had four or her eight kills in the opening set.
"Lana started strong and has been playing more aggressively over the last three weeks or so," Bahner said.
Cowley will play at Fort Scott Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Greyhounds are 8-12 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Despite Fort Scott's record, Bahner said her team will be focused and ready to play.
"It is an important match with it being a conference opponent on the road," Bahner said. "Our mindset going into the match will be to focus on improving on our side of the net."
