October 8, 2013LADY DRAGONS STUNNED BY CLOUD COUNTY IN JAYHAWK WEST ROAD MATCH
CONCORDIA - The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team was stunned on Monday night at Cloud County as the Thunderbirds upset the Lady Dragons 3-0 at the Thunderdome.
Cloud County jumped out to a nine-point first-set lead and held on to defeat HCC 25-22, 25-22, 25-19, snapping Hutchinson's 11-match winning streak and knocking HCC out of a first-place tie with Colby.
The Lady Dragons (15-7, 8-2 Jayhawk West) had a 20-match winning streak against Cloud County snapped. It's the first time in the rally score era - rally scoring started before the 2003 season - that Cloud County has defeated Hutchinson. It's the first time since a 2000 Region VI Tournament loser's bracket match that the Thunderbirds have defeated the Lady Dragons in volleyball.
Cloud County (9-12, 5-5) out-hit Hutchinson .363-.245, pounding down 48 kills to HCC's 35.
Sophomore Dragana Micic had a team-high 12 kills on .333 hitting. All-American Teresa Wade had 11 kills on .242 hitting with nine digs. Freshman Alex Keller had five kills on .444 hitting to go with four digs and 20 set assists.
The Lady Dragons had 43 digs and seven total blocks in the match. Sophomore Samantha Lackey had eight digs; Micic added seven and freshman Paige Weidner had six digs and 11 assists.
The Lady Dragons had trouble stopping the 1-2 Thunderbird punch of Hilta Pereira and Erin Terrell, who combined for 31 kills. Periera had 16 kills and hit .394. Terrell had 15 kills on .257 hitting. Cloud setter had a double-double with 34 assists, 10 digs and five kills.
Despite hitting .304 in the opening set, Hutchinson found itself down 16-7. HCC chipped away pulling within 23-22, but Cloud County finished off the set. The Lady Dragons hut just .222 in each of the next two sets and could never build more than a two-point lead at any one point.
Hutchinson will now travel to Seward County on Wednesday in a Jayhawk West match to start at 6:30 p.m. at the Green House in Liberal. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.
