October 11, 2013Suffering its first defeats of the season this past weekend in Texas, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team began a new winning streak with a 25-7, 25-11, 25-14 win over Longview Community College Tuesday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The victory was Cowley's 55th in a row at home and improved the Lady Tigers' record to 21-3 on the season.
Cowley College head coach Jenifer Bahner was pleased with the way her team bounced back from its first set back of the season.
"After a couple of losses a team can get down but we didn't do that," Bahner said. "We put the losses in the past, focused on this match, and minimized our errors."
The Lady Tigers raced out to a 10-1 lead of the first set and scored the final seven points in the 25-7 win.
Trailing 6-5 in the second set, Cowley would score eight straight points and never looked back in the 25-11 win.
The third set would be more of the same, with Cowley scoring 12 of the first 15 points in the 25-14 victory.
Being in control of the match allowed Cowley to play each player on its roster with the exception of Shaeli Munroe, who is nursing an ankle injury.
Sophomore B.J. Specht led Cowley with 10 kills and four blocks, while Jessica McDougald added eight kills and no hitting errors. Freshmen Rheid Tridle (four kills), Kate Madsen (three kills), and Courtney Hoag (three blocks) also played well.
Cowley will take part in another tournament this weekend when they face four teams at the Central Nebraska Tournament Friday and Saturday in Columbus, NE. The Lady Tigers will open play Friday at 3 p.m. against Iowa Western, which is ranked No. 8 in the latest NJCAA Division I rankings. Cowley will then face Iowa Lakes at 7 p.m.
"We are excited to compete against another (NJCAA) Division I school to see how we fare," Bahner said.
On Saturday, the Lady Tigers will play North Platte at 11 a.m. and host Central Nebraska at 3 p.m.
"We played Central Nebraska in our first match of the season and we know they have improved since then and will have a good home crowd for the match," Bahner said. "This will be another good tournament for our team to continue our growth and improvement."
