October 11, 2013STRANGE DAY AS LADY DRAGON VOLLEYBALL SPLITS IN MISSOURI
WEST PLAINS, Mo. - It was a de ja vu, but all-in-reverse kind of day for the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team on Friday at the Missouri State University-West Plains Invitational at the West Plains Civic Center.
Hutchinson blasted Jefferson College in the opening set of its first match on Friday, only to see the Vikings defeat the Lady Dragons in each of the next three sets.
The same thing happened again in Hutchinson's next match against Colby. Except it was the Lady Dragons who were blown out in the first set before taking the next three to defeat the Trojans for the second time in six days.
Teresa Wade, Dragana Micic and Alex Keller all posted double-doubles against Jefferson, but the Lady Dragons dropped a 25-9, 21-25, 21-25, 21-25 decision in the second meeting of the season with the Vikings. The season series is 1-1.
Against Colby, Wade posted her third career 20-kill match, pounding down 22 kills in a 16-25, 25-11, 26-14, 25-15 victory over the Trojans.
Hutchinson (17-8) will play invitational host Missouri State University-West Plains at noon on Saturday in the Lady Dragons' only match of Saturday.
A scoring error in the second set perhaps turned the tide in this match after HCC dominated the first set, holding a team to single digits in a set for the third time this season.
Micic recorded a service ace to give HCC a 17-13 second-set lead, or so HCC head coach Patrick Hall thought. Two points later, the scoreboard read 18-16 HCC and Hall questioned the scorer's table as to why the score was changed.
As it turned out, the scorer's table never recorded Micic's ace, so instead of a 17-13 lead, the official scorer had it 16-14. But because the mistake couldn't be found, the score wasn't changed and that two-point swing turned out to be huge. When the score was 23-21 Jefferson, had the mistake not occurred, it would have been 23-21 HCC. Jefferson won the second set and ultimately the match in four sets.
Despite the mistake, the Lady Dragons had trouble finishing in each of the last three sets against Jefferson. Lady Dragon mistakes led to the final seven Jefferson points of the third set.
Wade finished with a team-high 18 kills and 16 digs for her 10th double-double of the season to lead the Lady Dragons. Micic had her second-straight double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Freshman middle Nicole Kinser had nine kills.
Keller posted her second career double-double with a season-high 39 set assists and 10 digs.
Sophomore libero Samantha Lackey had 22 digs, her fourth 20-dig match of the season. She also moved past Sarah Claborn (2005-06) for third on the career digs list.
Wade pounded down 22 kills to power the Hutchinson comeback against Colby in a non-conference matchup. Just six days ago in the Sports Arena, Hutchinson swept Colby to move into a tie for first place in the Jayhawk West, only to lose that grip two days later with a 3-0 loss at Cloud County.
Micic had her third-straight double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Micic had a .314 hitting percentage against Colby. Kinser added 11 digs.
Keller had a season-high 41 assists and eight digs for HCC. Lackey finished with 16 digs.
MATCH NOTES - HCC was supposed to play two matches on Saturday, but Wallace State had to pull out of the invitational because several players are sick. Teresa Wade now has 699 career kills, which is fifth most in Lady Dragon history. Wade is just 12 kills shy of moving past Molly Bergkamp (2007-08) into fourth place on the career list. Samantha Lackey is just 10 digs shy of moving past Megan Koster (2005-06) into second place on the career digs list. Nicole Kinser had a combined 20 kills and hit .588 in two matches on Friday. Lackey now has 15 career matches of 20 or more kills.
