October 15, 2013No. 1-ranked volleyball team continues demanding schedule
One week after playing three NJCAA Division I teams ranked in the top-10 at the Tyler (TX) Tournament, the NJCAA Division I No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team faced three more ranked opponents at the Central Nebraska Tournament held Friday and Saturday in Columbus, NE.
This time, Cowley opened with a hard fought 23-25, 22-25, 24-26 loss to Iowa Western, which is ranked No. 8 in the latest NJCAA Division I poll.
The Lady Tigers had 15 hitting errors and four serving errors in the defeat.
"I give Iowa Western credit for taking us out of our system but our team has to learn how to recover better from errors," Cowley head coach Jenifer Bahner said.
Cowley bounced back to defeat North Platte (NE) 25-16, 25-13, 25-12 later on Friday, before dispatching NJCAA DII No. 20-ranked Bismarck State (ND) 25-14, 25-20, 25-19, and No. 15-ranked Central Nebraska 25-10, 21-25, 25-12, 25-19 on Saturday.
"Our team came out really energized, focused and excited for the match against Central Nebraska," Bahner said. "As you can see from the first set of scores it made a huge difference in our play and we were able to beat a very good team pretty easily. However, our up and down play became a factor as we went into game two and lost a little bit of energy. However, the difference here was we were able to refocus after that loss, come back and win set three and four to ultimately win the match."
Sophomore B.J. Specht led the team in kills in three of the four matches, while Kate Madsen led the team with 10 kills in the win over Bismarck State.
McKenzie Hartzog had a solid weekend and finished with 78 digs.
Cowley is now 24-4 on the season. The Lady Tigers will play host to Redlands Community College Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Cowley defeated Redlands in straight sets back on Sept. 26 at a match played in El Reno, OK.
