October 25, 2013HCC VOLLEYBALL SPLITS WITH ILLINOIS CENTRAL, MSU-WEST PLAINS
HILLSBORO, Mo. - Outside hitters Teresa Wade and Dragana Micic combined for 87 kills and four double-doubles while Samantha Lackey unofficially broke a school record on Friday as the final weekend of the 2013 regular season started with a split for the Jayhawk West co-champion Hutchinson Community College volleyball team at the Jefferson College Tournament.
Hutchinson nearly rallied from 0-2 down to win for the fifth team in program history in the tournament opener against Missouri State University-West Plains, falling in five sets to the Grizzlies 19-25, 26-28, 25-22, 25-21, 15-17. Hutchinson (21-10 overall) salvaged the Friday split, defeating Division II, No. 6-ranked Illinois Central 25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22.
The Lady Dragons will close out the regular season on Saturday with back-to-back morning matches, against Indian Hills at 9 a.m. and host Jefferson College at 11 a.m. It will be the third meeting of the season between Hutchinson and Jefferson, each team owning one victory apiece.
WEST PLAINS RECAP
It was almost de ja vu all over again for Hutchinson and MSU-West Plains at the Jefferson Tournament. One year ago, these same two teams met on the same court and HCC rallied from a two-set deficit to upend the Grizzlies.
It nearly happed again on Friday as HCC rallied to win sets 3 and 4 after falling down 0-2. The Lady Dragons had fifth-set leads of 7-4 and 11-10, but the Grizzlies took advantage of nine final-set Hutchinson errors to outlast the Lady Dragons 17-15.
This was the second classic five-set match between Hutchinson and West Plains, which is receiving votes in this week's NJCAA Division I Volleyball Poll, in the past three weeks. The Lady Dragons are 21-4 in matches that go less than five sets, but fall to 0-6 in five-set matches.
Lackey unofficially broke her own school record with 40 saves against the Grizzlies. Her old record was 34, which was set in the 2012 Region VI championship match against Barton at Newman University. The HCC coaching staff will go through the film to verify the record.
Wade had her 14th double-double of the season and 26th of her career with 23 kills, 11 digs and three service aces. Wade hit .267 for the match. Micic had 17 kills on just .109 hitting, but added 12 kills for her sixth double-double of the season.
Freshman setter Alex Keller had a career-high 50 set assists to power Hutchinson offensively. Freshman Paige Weidner added 12 assists. The combined 62 assists tied for the fifth most in a match in HCC history.
The Lady Dragons had eight service aces and seven team blocks against West Plains.
ILLINOIS CENTRAL RECAP
The Lady Dragons defeated a nationally ranked team for the first time this season. HCC is now 1-4 vs. NJCAA ranked opponents.
Wade posted her 14th double-double of the season and 27th of her career with 19 kills on .188 hitting and 16 digs.
Micic hit .386 with only one error in 44 swings. She finished with her seventh double-double of the season, accounting for 18 kills and 13 digs.
Kawehi Granito-Wallace had nine kills and Nicole Kinser added five kills.
Keller had 44 assists, while Widener added six. Lackey finished with 14 digs.
