With three one run games in the opening day of the Class 5A tournament, one would expect the second day to be equally as competitive.
That's what everyone is hoping for as the tournament will get back in action at 11AM on Friday morning with the third place game and championship to follow.
Hovpen Sports was at the 5A tournament and recorded over 400 photos which can be found at Hovpen Photo Shop and will return to the same site Saturday for more.
Top seeded Bishop Carroll got a complete game shutout and no hitter out of Jessi Haffner to open the tournament against a Bishop Miege team which had upset second ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas to get there, using a solo home run off the bat of Morgan Balderas for her leverage, riding it all the way to the finish.
Second seed Goddard also advanced, but this one took nine innings, decided with a two on base hit by Morgan Bohanan in the bottom of the ninth in walkoff fashon.
Kelsey Sterneker got the ball for Maize South, and picked up another one run (3-2) nail biter in the nightcap with the go ahead run coming off a leadoff triple in the sixth off the bat of Taylor Mannis, scoring on a throw to first one hitter later.
Mill Valley jumped on Andover Central early for five in the first, but the Jags settled down and played even the rest of the way with the final ending up 5-1.
There were some good games in 6A also, as Washburn Rural came from behind in the late innings to beat Shawnee Mission Northwest 7-4. Wichita Northwest scored four in the fourth without the benefit of a base hit and held on to beat Maize 4-3. Olathe East as expected got behind WSU signee Jenni Brooks to beat Blue Valley Northwest 5-0 and in the final, Derby upset Free State 3-2
The only upset in 4A came when Pratt shocked third seeded Frontenac 10-4 as Paola beat Mulvane by the same score, Augusta beat Hayden 12-9 and DeSoto beat Rock Creek 6-2
A pair of shutouts for Lyons and Sacred Heart in 3A along with a 6-3 Silver Lake win with a close Marysville 3-2 victory over Humboldt sets that final four and in Class 2-1A, all seeded teams won with the four finalists having only two losses among them for Saturdays shootouts.
It looks to be a great day of ball on Friday.
