Bahner, Specht earn AVCA honors

Guiding the Cowley College volleyball team to its second national championship in the past three years, Jenifer Bahner was recently named the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Two-Year College Midwest Region Coach of the Year. Sophomore B.J. Specht also received recognition and was selected to the AVCA First-Team All-America list.

Bahner, who completed her fifth season as head coach at Cowley, led the Lady Tigers to an impressive regular season finish, clinching the Jayhawk East title with an unblemished record in conference play and an overall 35-4 record. The season was culminated by Cowley capturing the national title with a five-set win over No. 2-seed Parkland (IL).

"It is neat to continue to put our college and program on the map," Bahner said. "This is an all-around award. I could not have received this honor without the contributions from the players and the administration at Cowley."

Bahner will represent the Midwest Region on the 2013 AVCA Two-Year Colleges National Coach of the Year ballot. The awards will be officially presented at the 2013 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Seattle, Wash. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention.

This marks the second time in the past three years that Bahner has been named the AVCA Two-Year College Midwest Region Coach of the Year.

Specht, who was named the national tournament Most Valuable Player and co-Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division player of the Year, capped her incredible season by being named an AVCA First-Team All-American.

Specht joins former Lady Tiger greats Martyna Gluchowicz and Roslandy Acosta as AVCA First-Team All-Americans.

"She is joining an elite group of players at Cowley with this honor," Bahner said. "It is cool to see her hard work pay off."

Irvine Valley College middle blocker Annie Mitchem was named the Two-Year College AVCA National Player of the Year.
