No rest for nation's No. 3 team

QUICK TURNAROUND FOR LADY DRAGONS WITH MONDAY ROAD TEST AT GARDEN CITY





There will be no rest for the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team as just 48 hours after the biggest victory of the season, the Lady Dragons head to Garden City for a make-up game because of last week's snowstorm.

The Lady Dragons and Broncbusters will meet for the second time this season at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Perryman Athletic Complex in Garden City. The game will be videostreamed live by the Blue Dragon Sports Network and broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KWBW-AM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:20 p.m.

Monday's game will be the second for the Lady Dragons in an eight-day stretch. Between Monday's trip to Garden City and Wednesday's to Colby, the Lady Dragons will rack up a combined 14 hours on a bus and 820 miles traveled over a 48-hour period.

HCC (22-0, 8-0 Jayhawk West) needed to rally from a seven-point second-half deficit on Saturday to defeat No. 9 Seward County 81-71 at the Sports Arena. HCC extended its winning streak to 23 games and homecourt win streak to 96 games as Kalani Purcell posted a huge double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Lady Dragons.

Garden City (13-10, 5-3) is locked in a four-team battle for third and fourth place in the Jayhawk West. The Broncbusters defeated Colby 63-47 on Saturday and have won 5 of their last 6 games.

HCC suffered its only Jayhawk West loss in the last 2 1/2 seasons last year at Garden City. Hutch defeated the Broncbusters 77-43 this season on Jan. 15 at the Sports Arena.



Noting The Lady Dragons

+ Over the last five games, Hutchinson has scored 84.5 points per game, shooting 52.4 percent overall and 34.6 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, HCC has allowed 55.6 points per game. Opponents are shooting 30.5 percent from the floor.

+ Entering play on Monday, the Lady Dragons rank nationally in the following categories: No. 4 in scoring defense (48.3 ppg); No. 1 in field-goal defense (28.0 percent); No. 2 in assists (20.9/game); No. 4 in rebounding (50.5/game); No. 9 in field-goal percentage (47.4%); No. 13 in 3-point percentage (36.0%); and No. 15 in scoring offense (82.2 ppg).

+ Overall, HCC ranks second in the Jayhawk West in scoring average at 82.2 points per game. The Lady Dragons hold the top spot in field-goal shooting in the Jayhawk West, shooting 47.4 percent and 3-point shooting at 36.0 percent. HCC is fifth in free-throw shooting at 64.2 percent.

+ Defensively, Hutchinson continues to be dominant. The Lady Dragons are allowing a Jayhawk West-low 48.3 points per game. The Lady Dragons are No. 1 in the West in defensive field-goal percentage (28.0 percent) and 3-point defense (23.1 percent).

+ In conference play, the Lady Dragons average 81.0 points per game, while shooting 50.3 percent overall, 42.1 percent from 3-point range and 63.0 percent from the foul line. Defensively in league play, HCC is allowing 52.0 points per game with opponents shooting 29.6 percent overall and 22.7 percent from long range.

+ HCC is averaging 5.18 made 3-pointers per game, third in the Jayhawk West.

+ Sophomore Jamie Patrick is HCC's leading scorer at 18.5 points per contest, which is third in the Jayhawk West. Patrick is shooting 55.5 percent overall (2nd in the West). She ranks second in the league in 3-point percentage at 41.1 percent and is second in made 3's (2.00/game). Patrick is shooting 78.9 percent at the free-throw line, which ranks third in the league. Patrick is averaging 5.9 rebounds per game. Patrick is 10th in the Jayhawk West in steals at 1.73 per game. Patrick is averaging 17.6 points per game in conference play, shooting 62.2 percent overall and 50.0 percent from 3-point range.

+ Over the last three games, freshman forward Kalani Purcell has averaged 14 points and 16 rebounds. With a recent school-record performance of 22 rebounds and two double-doubles in that stretch, Purcell moved up to No. 3 in the Jayhawk West in rebounding at 10.41 rebounds per game. Purcell has 12 games of 10 or more rebounds and a team-high eight double-doubles this season. Purcell is second on the team and is 14th in the Jayhawk West in scoring at 12.4 points per game. Purcell is shooting 48.1 percent from the field. Purcell leads the league and is 12th in the NJCAA in steals (3.68/game) and is tied for fifth the West in blocks (1.23/game). Purcell is eighth in the conference in assists at 3.41/game. In conference play, Purcell is averaging 13.1 points, 13.0 rebounds and 3.38 steals per game.

+ Sophomore point guard Jen'Von'Ta Hill is averaging 10.7 points per game. She is shooting 36.6 percent overall, 25.5 percent from 3-point range and 63.1 percent from the foul line. Hill leads the league and ranks tied for ninth in the NJCAA in assists at 6.00 per game and is ranked fifth in the Jayhawk West in steals at 2.82 per game. Hill is averaging 13.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 3.1 steals per game in Jayhawk West play.

+ Sophomore Kiarra Jones leads the Jayhawk West in field-goal percentage at 56.8 percent. She's averaging 8.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Jones is averaging 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in the Jayhawk West.

+ Sophomore Briana Starks is averaging 8.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. She is averaging 9.8 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 50.8 percent in conference play.

+ Freshman Shakira Harding broke a scoring slump with a career-high 16 points against Dodge City last week. She averages of 7.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Harding is scoring 7.6 points per game in league play.

+ Freshman Chelsea Dewey is averaging 7.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

+ The Lady Dragons are second in rebounding in the Jayhawk West at 50.5 rebounds per game. They have 14 games of 50 or more rebounds this season, which includes a season-high 61 rebounds against Mesa. HCC also leads the league in rebounding margin at plus-17.7. HCC allows 32.8 rebounds per contest.

+ The Lady Dragons are averaging a league-best 20.9 assists per game.

+ Turnovers have been an issue for HCC so far this season. The Lady Dragons are turning the ball over 17.6 times per game, while forcing 21.5 turnovers per game. Shockingly, opponents haven't been able to take full advantage of the Lady Dragon miscues. The first 20 opponents have averaged only 10.5 points off HCC turnovers per game.

Scouting Garden City

+ First-year head coach Nick Salazar saw his Broncbusters lose four in a row to start the season, but then go on to win 13 of the next 19 games. Garden has won 4 of its last 5 games after a Saturday 63-47 victory over Colby.

+ The Broncbusters ranks seventh in the Jayhawk West in scoring offense at 67.5 points per game. Garden City is shooting 41.6 percent as a team (5th in the league) and 36.0 percent from 3-point range (3rd in the league). The Busters average a league-low 2.86 3-pointers. The Busters rank seventh in free-throw percentage at 61.4 percent.

+ Defensively, Garden City is third in the Jayhawk West in scoring defense at 63.4 points per game. The Busters are fourth in the league in field-goal defense at 36.0 percent and seventh in 3-point defense at 31.2 percent.

+ Shaqunna Collins is the seventh-leading scorer in the Jayhawk West, leading Garden City at 15.4 points per game. Collins is shooting 46.3 percent from the floor, 32.6 percent from 3-point range and 66.9 percent from the foul line. Collins averages 6.0 rebounds and has a team-high 63 steals (4th in the West). + Sandra Davis is Garden City's second-leading scorer at 10.5 points per game. She is at 50.0 percent shooting from the floor. Davis ranks ninth in the Jayhawk West in rebounding at 7.5 boards per game.

+ Loysha Morris averages 8.4 points. She ranks seventh in the league in steals at 2.27 per game.

+ Allegria Chisom is scoring 8.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.

+ Kate Inchun leads the Jayhawk West in 3-point efficiency at 46.7 percent. Inchun, who averages 3.7 points per game, has a team-high 21 3-pointers.

+ Garden City pulls down an average of 40.6 rebounds per game, including 12.0 offensive rebounds per game. The Busters allow 37.0 boards per contest.

+ Garden City is averaging 21.5 turnovers per game, the second-highest average in the Jayhawk West. The Busters are forcing 20.0 opponent turnovers per contest.

+ The Busters are averaging 10.0 assists, 9.9 steals and 2.3 blocked shots per game.



Series History vs. Garden City

This will be the 77th meeting between Hutchinson and Garden City in a continuous series that began in 1976.

The Lady Dragons own a 60-16 overall record, but had a six-game winning streak snapped last season. HCC has won 14 wins of the last 16 meetings. HCC is 35-3 against Garden City at the Sports Arena and 25-12 in Garden City. The Busters won the only Region VI meeting in 2004.

The 60 wins over Garden City are the second most against any HCC opponent.
