Tigers impresive in win
A week after knocking off No. 8-ranked Hutchinson Community College in a mid-week game, the Cowley College baseball team defeated a strong Butler Community College squad by a score of 9-4 Tuesday in Arkansas City.
Storm Rynard gave the Tigers exactly what they needed on the mound as the freshman tossed six shutout innings, while striking out eight and walking none.
"This game always starts and ends on the mound," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. "Storm allowed our team to relax and let the offense get into a groove."
Cowley gave Rynard all the run support he would need as they scored a pair of runs in the first inning and three more in the second. The Tigers got to Butler starting pitcher Brady Holcomb for nine hits and six runs in the game's first three innings of play.
A.J. Shaw continued his terror at the plate by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in, while batting out of the leadoff spot. Shaw has had at least two hits in six straight games and is riding an 11-game hitting streak.
"He's our table setter, as he goes we go," Burroughs said.
Butch Rea added two hits and three runs scored and Dillon White went 2-for-4 with a RBI in the victory.
Cameron Paley pitched the seventh and eighth innings, while Tyler Day pitched the ninth for the Tigers.
Cowley is now 22-9 overall, while Butler's record drops to 20-13.
Logan Beard, a sophomore outfielder from Udall, KS, went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Grizzlies.
The Tigers will now prepare to play an important four-game series against No. 5-ranked Neosho County. The teams will open with a doubleheader in Arkansas City Thursday at 1 p.m. before playing the final two games of the series Saturday in Chanute.
The Panthers, which are 29-7 overall, are currently in second place in the Jayhawk East, one game in front of the Tigers.
"Thursday will be a great day for people to come see two really good junior college teams play," Burroughs said. "It will be a fun series."
