Sweeping a doubleheader against Coffeyville Community College Thursday in Arkansas City, the Cowley College baseball team jumped over the Red Ravens in the conference standings and stayed within two games of first place.
The Tigers got strong starting pitching from freshman Parker Rigler in the opener and sophomore Seth Holman in the nightcap as they won by scores of 5-3 and 8-5.
"Those guys set the tone," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said.
With the victories, Cowley improves to 26-12 overall and 18-8 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Coffeyville drops to 25-15 overall and 17-9 in the conference. The Tigers remain two games behind conference-leading Johnson County (20-6).
In Thursday's opener, Parker Rigler (6-0) allowed three hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings as he picked up his team-leading sixth win of the season. Maverick Macy followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, while Tyler Day allowed one run in the seventh inning before nailing down the save.
Ryan McBroom went 3-for-3 with a RBI, while A.J. Shaw and Butch Rea each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In game two, Cowley scored seven runs in the first two innings and led 8-2 before Coffeyville made it interesting with three runs in the ninth.
Freshman first baseman Bobby Bassler had a two-run double in a three-run first inning and finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Rea also finished with four hits as the Tigers pounded out 13 hits in the victory.
Sophomore Seth Holman (5-2) went a season-high eight innings on the mound. Holman struck out eight, and allowed only five hits and two earned runs.
The teams meet again for a doubleheader Saturday in Coffeyville at 2 p.m.
