KJCCC names softball teams

HCC SOFTBALL PLACES 3 ON ALL-JAYHAWK, 4 ON ALL-REGION TEAM

Four members of the 2014 Hutchinson Community College softball team earned postseason recognition as the All-Jayhawk Conference and All-Region VI teams were announced late Monday night.

Sophomore Makenzi Shackley and freshmen Lacey Hudson and Sarah Rothe were named honorable mention all-Jayhawk East. Those three players and freshman second baseman Tayler Suhler were named second team All-Region VI.

MAKENZI SHACKLEY

The sophomore utility player from Olathe had a tremendous season, batting a team-high .434 this season with 59 hits, 17 doubles, two triples and eight home runs. Shackley scored 39 runs while driving in 45 this runs this season. Shackley produced a slugging percentage of .765 and an on-base percentage of .448.

Shackley had 17 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games this season. She had a season-high four hits four times this season. She drove in five runs in a game three times and became just the second player in HCC softball history to hit three home runs in a game, doing so against Dodge City on March 25.

Shackley's .434 season batting average ranks fifth best in Lady Dragon history. Her 59 hits tied for 20th most. Her 17 doubles are tied for third most in a season and her eight homers are fifth most. Shackley totaled 104 total bases (sixth most) and her .765 slugging percentage ranked No. 2 on the Lady Dragon season list. She tied for third in extra-base hits with 27 and her .448 on-base percentage tied for ninth best.

Shackley's .439 batting average over two seasons established a new career record for batting average. She had 127 career hits, which is fourth most in a Lady Dragon career. Her .692 career slugging percentage ranks as the second-best mark in team history.

Shackley ranks high in several other career categories: RBIs (88), which is third most; doubles (29), which ranks fourth; extra-base hits (45), third most; home runs (12), which is fourth best; on-base percentage (.458), fourth best; triples (4), which ranks in a tie for fifth; total bases (200), which is fifth most; and runs scored (80), which is sixth best on that career list.

LACEY HUDSON

Playing shortstop and batting leadoff for every game this season, Lacey Hudson excelled at both.

Offensively, she also hit better than .400 for a season at .411. That is the ninth-best batting average for a season in team history.

Hudson, a freshman from Enid, Okla., led the Lady Dragons in hits (60), runs scored (40), triples (5), walks (12) and tied for the team lead with five stolen bases. She had two home runs and 32 RBIs. She had an on-base percentage of.469 and a slugging percentage of .610.

Hudson had a season high four hits three times and drove in a season-high four runs vs. Cloud County on March 11.

Defensively, Hudson posted a .932 fielding percentage.

Hudson is tied with five others for 15th on the HCC single-season hits list. Her five triples tied for third most in a season. She ranks sixth for a season in on-base percentage and is ninth in a season for slugging percentage out of the leadoff spot in the batting order.

SARAH ROTHE

Behind the plate, freshman Sarah Rothe was stellar from Day 1. From March 15 on, Rothe's offensive play matched her defensive prowess.

For the season, Rothe hit .378 with 48 hits, 11 home runs, 48 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .732.

The HCC freshman catcher's numbers after March 15: A .427 batting average with 38 hits, including 10 home runs and nine doubles, 29 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .865.

Rothe, a Hutchinson High product, became the first HCC softball player in history to hit three home runs in a game, doing so against Hesston College at Fun Valley on March 18. She had a season-high three hits six times this season.

Defensively, Rothe established a new single-season fielding percentage record of .991 with only two errors in 218 chances this season. She threw out 12 of 26 basestealers this season, a success rate of 35 percent.

Rothe's 11 home runs are second only behind Jamie Tanno's 15 on the Hutchinson season list. She already ranks fifth on HCC's career home run list. Her 23 extra base hits rank seventh for a single season. Her .732 slugging percentage also ranks third on the HCC season charts.

TAYLER SUHLER

April 4, 2014 won't be a day to remember for the Hutchinson freshman second base from Hesston. Playing the second game of a doubleheader at Fun Valley against Coffeyville, Suhler suffered a season-ending injury, putting an immediate halt to what was becoming a very good season for her.

Suhler was fourth on the 2014 Lady Dragons with a .365 batting average, totaling 27 hits in 28 games played. She had six doubles, a triple and two home runs while driving in 16 from the No. 9 slot in the batting order.

She had a season-high three hits vs. Highland on March 14 and drove in a season-high three runs vs. Garden City on Feb. 19.

Defensively, Suhler had a .969 fielding percentage with three errors on 98 defensive chances.
