COLBY - Sophomore Lauren Darby posted a career-high 17 kills to lead the No. 19 Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a 3-1 Jayhawk West victory on Wednesday night at Colby.
Hutchinson dropped the first set 20-25, but rallied to win the next three 25-12, 25-20, 25-17.
One year ago, Hutchinson opened the Jayhawk West season at Colby and dropped a five-set match to the Trojans. That loss put HCC behind the league eight-ball the entire season, finally forcing a tie for the Jayhawk West title when Barton helped out Hutch with a victory over Colby on the final night of the conference season.
When Colby rallied to win the first set on Wednesday at the Colby Community Building, the Blue Dragons (3-2 overall, 1-0 Jayhawk West) didn't waver, dominating the second set and pulling away late in each of the third and fourth set to close out the victory. Darby posted career-high marks with her 17 kills and .533 hitting percentage.
Freshman Jai Chapman had 10 kills. Freshman Petra Silic had eight kills and sophomore Nicole Kinser had seven kills.
The Blue Dragons were huge at the net against Colby as Hutchinson posted 12 team blocks. Silic and Kinser both had six blocks lead to lead HCC.
Freshman libero Maddi Cumpston came into the match in the second set and posted a season-high 14 digs. Her scramble play late in the fourth set was a key two-point swing in the set. From deep in the backcourt, somehow Cumpston got the ball back over and Colby put an attack in the net to give HCC a 17-13 lead. HCC outscored Colby after that point 8-4 to close out the match.
Freshman setter Tarynn Stueder had 20 assists and six digs. Freshman setter Aubrey Wilson had 15 assists and six digs.
The Blue Dragons continue their nine-match road trip to open the season on Sept. 5-6 at the College of Southern Idaho Classic in Twin Falls, Idaho.
